Adoption Guidelines:

  • Grainger County Humane Society has the right to inspect the animal(s)' new home before and/or after adoption.  If the home is not suitable to GCHS, adoption may be refused or the animal may be removed from the home.  GCHS reserves the right to deny adoption of any animal to any person for just cause, including numerous animal ordinance violations.
  • Grainger County Humane Society makes no representation, warranty, or guarantee as to the health or disposition of an adopted animal.  GCHS attempts to inquire about background of animals privately surrendered to GCHS, but cannot guarantee or warranty any animal which is adopted (whether the animal originated as a stray or a privately surrendered animal)
  • The adopter agrees to take the adopted animal to a veterinarian of the adopter's choosing within one (1) week of the adoption for an exam and any needed booster vaccinations.  If the adopted animal becomes sick or dies within said one (1) week period, the adopter may be permitted an exchange or refund.  A written statement from the attending veterinarian detailing the nature of the of the illness or problem must be provided in order to receive a refund or exchange.  In the event an exchange is granted, the adopter has up to 6 months to choose another adoptable animal.
  • The adopter is responsible for any and all future veterinary care and associated cost (barring spay/neuter if not already performed at time of adoption) once the animal is released from GCHS.
  • All animals adopted through GCHS must be spayed or neutered.  If this has not been done at time of adoption, it must be done by the time the animal is six (6) months old.  This service is included in the adoption fee, provided by specific vets under our contract.  If the spay/neuter surgery is not performed by the time the animal is six (6) months old, GCHS can repossess the animal and any offspring.
  • In adopting an animal from GCHS, the adopter agrees to provide the animal with basic humane care which includes (but is not limited to) appropriate shelter from inclement weather, appropriate food and water, appropriate grooming and parasite control, basic veterinary care, and protection from abuse and neglect for the lifetime of the animal.  The adopter also agrees to comply with all applicable state and local statutes, laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Dogs must be kept in a safe, fenced area, unless other arrangements are made with the adoption chairperson.
  • DOGS CANNOT BE CHAINED OR PERMITTED TO ROAM OUTDOORS UNSUPERVISED.
  • Cats must be kept indoors or, with agreement of the adoption chairperson, in a safe outdoor area.
  • CATS CANNOT BE PERMITTED TO ROAM OUTDOORS UNSUPERVISED.
  • If an adopter can no longer care for the animal in question, the animal shall be returned to GCHS.  An alternative adoptive home must be approved by GCHS before the animal in question is transferred (i.e. adopter can not "give away" the adopted animal or find another home without consent and approval from GCHS).
  • Failure to comply with any of the above standards of adoption may result in GCHS reclaiming the animal.
  • Any and all costs incurred by Grainger County Humane Society in the repossession of an adopted animal from a situation deemed unsuitable by GCHS or in the recovery of an animal adopted from GCHS that is surrendered to a shelter or placed in a home not approved by GCHS will be collected from the adopter by any legal means.
  • The adopter agrees that no claim, action, demand, suit in law or equity will be brought against the Grainger County Humane Society, and hereby releases Grainger County Humane Society, its officers, its veterinarians (whether employees, volunteer or independent contractors) or agents from any and all actions, suits, claims and demands arising from an adoption.
  • By agreeing to GCHS adoption guidelines; the adopter declares that he has not been convicted of any act of animal cruelty in any court within the past ten (10) years.
