Anyone wishing to adopt an animal from Grainger County Humane Society, must
contact either the humane society at 865-567-0050 or use the contact information
given with the animal you are interested in. A short form and interview is
required. Potential adopters must have a valid identification and provide
vet references and/or personal references. The adoption fee is payable at
time of adoption.
Adoption Guidelines:
- Grainger County Humane Society has the right to inspect the animal(s)' new
home before and/or after adoption. If the home is not suitable to GCHS,
adoption may be refused or the animal may be removed from the home.
GCHS reserves the right to deny adoption of any animal to any person for
just cause, including numerous animal ordinance violations.
- Grainger County Humane Society makes no representation, warranty, or
guarantee as to the health or disposition of an adopted animal. GCHS
attempts to inquire about background of animals privately surrendered to
GCHS, but cannot guarantee or warranty any animal which is adopted (whether
the animal originated as a stray or a privately surrendered animal)
- The adopter agrees to take the adopted animal to a veterinarian of the
adopter's choosing within one (1) week of the adoption for an exam and any
needed booster vaccinations. If the adopted animal becomes sick or
dies within said one (1) week period, the adopter may be permitted an exchange or refund. A written statement from the attending veterinarian
detailing the nature of the of the illness or problem must be provided in
order to receive a refund or exchange. In the event an exchange is
granted, the adopter has up to 6 months to choose another adoptable animal.
- The adopter is responsible for any and all future veterinary care and
associated cost (barring spay/neuter if not already performed at time of
adoption) once the animal is released from GCHS.
- All animals adopted through GCHS must be spayed or neutered. If this
has not been done at time of adoption, it must be done by the time the
animal is six (6) months old. This service is included in the adoption
fee, provided by specific vets under our contract. If the spay/neuter
surgery is not performed by the time the animal is six (6) months old, GCHS
can repossess the animal and any offspring.
- In adopting an animal from GCHS, the adopter agrees to provide the animal
with basic humane care which includes (but is not limited to) appropriate
shelter from inclement weather, appropriate food and water, appropriate
grooming and parasite control, basic veterinary care, and protection from abuse and neglect for the
lifetime of the animal. The adopter also agrees to comply with all
applicable state and local statutes, laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- Dogs must be kept in a safe, fenced area, unless other arrangements are
made with the adoption chairperson.
- DOGS CANNOT BE CHAINED OR
PERMITTED TO ROAM OUTDOORS UNSUPERVISED.
- Cats must be kept indoors or, with agreement of the adoption chairperson,
in a safe outdoor area.
- CATS CANNOT BE PERMITTED TO ROAM
OUTDOORS UNSUPERVISED.
- If an adopter can no longer care for the animal in question, the animal
shall be returned to GCHS. An alternative adoptive home must be
approved by GCHS before the animal in question is transferred (i.e. adopter
can not "give away" the adopted animal or find another home
without consent and approval from GCHS).
- Failure to comply with any of the above standards of adoption may result
in GCHS reclaiming the animal.
- Any and all costs incurred by Grainger County Humane Society in the
repossession of an adopted animal from a situation deemed unsuitable by GCHS
or in the recovery of an animal adopted from GCHS that is surrendered to a
shelter or placed in a home not approved by GCHS will be collected from the
adopter by any legal means.
- The adopter agrees that no claim, action, demand, suit in law or equity
will be brought against the Grainger County Humane Society, and hereby
releases Grainger County Humane Society, its officers, its veterinarians
(whether employees, volunteer or independent contractors) or agents from any and all
actions, suits, claims and demands arising from an adoption.
- By agreeing to GCHS adoption guidelines; the adopter declares that he has
not been convicted of any act of animal cruelty in any court within the past
ten (10) years.
