"Heaven" & "Heavenly"
|
Heaven & Heavenly are the worst case of starvation and abuse
Grainger County Humane Society had ever discovered alive. Members
were shocked to find both dogs covered in deep pressure sores caused by
lack of body fat and muscle tissue. Their own bones had rubbed sores
through their skin. Both dogs were infested with internal worms of many
types. Severly emaciated, Heavenly weighed in at a shocking 28 pounds and
Heaven weighed in at a disturbing 24 pounds. Healthy dogs of their breed
and stature should weigh about 55-65 pounds or more! Their toenails were
so long it made it painful and difficult to walk correctly. Just lovingly
petting these dogs caused them pain, making any physical contact to the
dogs a painful experience for them. April/May 2008

This is
"Arrow", a stray dog that was thought
to have been shot. She was on her own for
more than a year as she escaped capture, having
several litters of puppies in the wild. Not all
of her previous litters had survived, but her current
litter of 11 puppies is doing well so far. She
was rescued by volunteers and given proper medical
treatment by GCHS. Upon examination and
surgery, it was discovered that instead of a
bullet, she had a 3 inch arrow tip lodged in her
forehead and this had been her pain for more
than a year. She recovered in about a
month while still caring for her pups. She and
her pups were placed up for adoption.

and the surgeons at UT, he eventually made a full
recovery and found a new home. January 2006 |

This was "Braveheart", found
with a horrible injury to his tail. Unknown if
this was abuse, neglect, or an unexplained injury, he
recovered after a tail amputation and was adopted.

This deep wound under the neck is
typical of an embedded collar wound. The cause
is simple neglect when a collar is left on and is too
tight. The collar eventually digs into the skin
causing a wound like this. This is just one
example of the many embedded collar cases we handle
each year.

This is a dog that had a rubber band placed around his
lower jaw. The tight band caused loss of circulation and cut into
the skin. Wounds like this can require extensive surgery and can
lead to permanent disfigurement for the animal. |
